Adulting 101 - Public Speaking

“According to most studies, people's number one fear is public speaking. Number two is death. Death is number two. Does that sound right? This means to the average person, if you go to a funeral, you're better off in the casket than doing the eulogy.”
-Jerry Seinfeld

Yikes! No matter your comfort level with public speaking, it's an inevitability of adult life. Join us for an interactive workshop where we will practice the art of public speaking through storytelling.

Humans have been using stories as a form of communication in every culture throughout history. Our brains are programmed to pay special attention to them, as evidenced by the surge in neural activity that takes place when we hear a story. They are used to share experiences, sell ideas, build community, or simply to entertain. Regardless of the story’s purpose, choosing to communicate in the form of a story will make you more interesting and memorable. After this workshop, you'll be better equipped to use this to your advantage.

About our speaker:

Katie Morris serves as Director of Marketing for Dale Carnegie Training in four of California's largest cities. Katie is also a certified Dale Carnegie Trainer and an adjunct professor at California State University East Bay, where she develops critical communication skills in business students at the start of promising careers, all the way to seasoned executives. Katie holds a key organizer role for Dale Carnegie's Global Day of Giving, an event bringing leadership workshops to thousands of youth worldwide. As a result of her passionate efforts to champion greater inclusivity in the business world, Katie has experience supporting blind and visually impaired individuals in the pursuit of greater interpersonal effectiveness.

TAP-SF is recruiting volunteers to help reroute a trail in McLaren Park in SF with Volunteers for Outdoor California!

McLaren Park is one of the largest parks in San Francisco. Its 317 acres offer a diverse array of wildlife and animals, along with great views of the bay and San Francisco. The park borders several neighborhoods in the city, including Visitacion Valley, the Portola, the Excelsior, and Crocker-Amazon. The park has several miles of multi-use trails open to the public.

Location:
McLaren Park in San Francisco

Date/Time:
August 18, 2019 (Sunday)
8:00 AM – 2:00 PM

What will we do?
Most of the trail work will be on Philosopher's Trail. Volunteers will be rerouting, decommissioning, and building brand new trails.

Sunday
8am - Registration, hot breakfast, and lunch prep.*
8:30am - Morning greeting, announcements, stretching and safety talk. Crew assignments. Project begins.
11:30am - Break for lunch on trail.
1:30pm - Head back to camp for snacks and goodbyes
2pm - Celebrate the work and help load up the truck!

*Breakfast and lunch are provided Sunday. Meals will be served in the center camp area. Lunch makings will be provided for volunteers to assemble their own lunch. There will be a hot breakfast on Sunday morning. Vegetarian options are provided for all meals.

What should I wear and bring?
- All tools will be provided.
- Water to stay hydrated.
- Small bag to carry water and lunch (breakfast and lunch will be provided).
- Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, allergy medication.
- For your safety and comfort and to protect yourself against poison oak and ticks: wear long pants (no shorts, please!), layers, long sleeves, and sturdy shoes with good tread.

Parking and Driving Directions
Participants are encouraged to carpool. Detailed directions to the parking area will be posted soon. Parking for the project will be within a short walk of the campsite. Signs will direct you to parking when you reach the park.

FAQ:
Q-1. How strenuous will the event be?
A-1. There are sections that are not steep and are in shade so not all parts of the day will be strenuous - VOC has first time volunteers come all the time. It will be up to each person how hard they want to work and push themselves - the motto is - you’re not on the couch so you’re already contributing something if you’re at the event! So as much or as little as you all feel up to is great :). There will be a crew leader for each group of volunteers.

Q-2. Are there poison oak and ticks there?
A-2. McLaren doesn’t always have a lot of poison oak and ticks - VOC just throw those both out as possibilities so people are aware.

**Please RSVP via Sparxo, space limited to first 20 sign-ups** https://e.sparxo.com/TAP-SF-Presents--Volunteering-at-McLaren-Park-SF?

Ever wanted to explore your artistic side? This is your chance!

Taiwanese American Professionals – San Francisco (TAP-SF) is hosting a private paint night event to fund-raise for our annual Bay Area Taiwanese American Community Scholarship, which recognizes outstanding SF Bay Area high school students.

Torrey Delaplane will lead the class, and she has taught Paint Nites throughout the Bay Area. After graduating from UC Berkeley with a B.A. in Art in 2009, Torrey lived and worked in San Francisco coaching soccer, teaching painting classes, and working in graphic design.

We will provide all supplies, as well as some Taiwanese snacks and non-alcoholic drinks.

All proceeds will go towards the TAP scholarship.

TAP-SF Presents: Family Giving Tree

Ever want to be a Santa!? Now it's your chance!! With the help of Family Giving Tree (www.familygivingtree.org), we are giving back to the community by giving a little present to the kids in need.

We will be gathering at Starbucks in Bridgepointe Plaza. We will be divided into 5 teams, each team will be responsible for 3 wish cards with kid's name, gender, and the gift they desire.

We will be doing scavenger hunt (SHOPPING!!! OHHH YEAH!) for these wishes in the nearby stores, i.e. Target, Marshalls, Bed Bath & Beyond, etc. Each team will get one card to start, and race back for the 2nd card once 1st card is accomplished, so as the 3rd card. Please expect to spend total of $10 to $20. These will be small and inexpensive items (we won’t be buying Playstations or Xboxs). The fastest team that accomplished all 3 cards will also get a prize!!Post hunt, we will get together for a group "holiday" lunch (optional).

Come join us and help spread Holiday Cheer to the families at Family Giving Tree by RSVP on Sparxo!
